Gyrotonic®

From the word ‘gyro’ (meaning ring, circular or spiral) and ‘tonic’ to tone or invigorate, The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a form of exercise that offers complete freedom of movement, increasing co-ordination, flexibility and strength through spiral and circular movements.
The developer, Juliu Horvath began his dance career with the Romanian State Opera and later went on to perform with the New York City Opera and the Houston Ballet. In the early 1970’s, Juliu’s dance career came to an abrupt end when he ruptured his Achilles tendon.

Following this injury he began to develop a method of ‘yoga for dancers’ which is a highly advanced level of what is known today as the GYROKINESIS METHODOLOGY®. He then went on to further develop equipment that would enhance the GYROKINESIS® mat exercises which led to the development of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.

Unlike conventional exercise equipment that works to develop strength in linear and isolated movements, GYROTONIC® exercises work with multiple joint articulations creating length without compression. Based on stretching and strengthening the muscles simultaneously whilst stimulating and strengthening the connective tissue around the joints, each exercise is partnered with a corresponding breathe pattern. The use of breathing techniques helps to stimulate the cardiovascular system gently or vigorously depending on the intensity of the exercise.
